Careers Day 2014
Graduates who have forged careers in the media return to Leeds to inspire and mentor the next generation of students for our annual Careers Day.
Alumni with distinguished jobs in news, music, sport, film, PR and digital production (including BBC sport news and features), ITV, Channel Four, Virgin Media, BskyB and the Vodaphone big top 40 radio chart – came to Leeds on Wednesday February 5, 2014. They gave students advice and took part in a special networking session. Career choices such as whether to pursue a job in presentation or production or how to set up as a freelance were discussed.
Media employers from the Leeds area including from the new local TV station MadeInLeeds, documentary company True North, PR and digital media agencies were also on hand to offer advice.
Two Broadcast Journalism graduates who attended our Careers Day have recently won awards for their contribution to digital media. Anna Doble, Head of Channel Four News Online was named in journalism.co.uk’s list of 50 female digital innovators and listed in the Hospital Club 100 media innovators. Amy Byard of Umpf PR was named #14 in The Drum’s list of the 30 most influential women in digital under the age of 30.
Also among the guests were Scott Solder, Deputy Head of BBC Current Affairs; Gareth Mead, Head of Media Relations at Virgin Media; Mim Shaikh, Assistant Producer for BBC Asian Network and freelance presenter; Amy Lee, presenter for BBC Newcastle; Alex Kunawicz, Senior Producer BBC Global Sports News; Sam Brown, Digital Marketing Manager for the Perform Group (who own the biggest football site in the world – Goal.com) and Matt Arnold freelance edit producer and producer/director, whose credits include The Only Way is Essex for ITV2, Got to Dance for SkyOne, Celebrity Coach Trip for C4, ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Millions’ and ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Valentine’ for C4.
During the Careers Day, our students invited the guests into our Television studio to ask them about their time in Leeds, their career path and for those all important top tips on getting a job.
