Sam Brown: Digital Marketing Manager for the Perform Group, who own the biggest football site in the world, Goal.com

Sam graduated in Communications and New Media from the University of Leeds in 2005. Having tried his hand at freelance web design straight out of University, Sam took up a role working for a commercial property firm in Leeds. The economy imploded 18 months later so having been made redundant, he decided a career change was needed. He joined Dubit, a youth marketing agency based in the city centre where he got to work with the likes of Vue Cinemas, Def Jam Records and X-Factor. He then moved to ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ (formerly the Yorkshire Tourist Board), where his final project was running the digital side of their successful bid to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire. Following this, he joined the Perform Group as the Digital Marketing Manager for the biggest football site in the world, Goal.com in May 2012.

John Puddephatt: Web Designer

John has just graduated from the MA Communications Studies programme. He is currently working as a freelance digital communications consultant and web designer, specialising in supporting small to medium-sized charities. Previously he worked in the marketing department at Leeds University Union where he oversaw the organisation’s digital platforms. He was heavily involved in the Leeds Student newspaper and was Associate Editor in the year it won ‘Best Newspaper’ at the Guardian Student Media Awards.

Bella Slade: User Experience Consultant, Foolproof

Bella graduated from the School of Media and Communication in 2011 with a BA in New Media, after doing a sandwich course of 4 years with a study abroad year in Sydney, Australia. During study gaps she completed two internships for user experience agencies, in London and Berlin. She then studied for a MSc in Human-Computer Interaction at University College London and completed a short contract for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, assisting with research for a new PlayStation console. She is now a User Experience Consultant at Foolproof, an experience design consultancy, conducting research and design for clients such as Sony, Virgin and HSBC.

Aaron Thomas: Senior Front-End Developer at Mixd – Creative Digital and Print

Aaron graduated from New Media in 2012. During his second and third years of study he undertook a number of freelance projects for small businesses, charities, and organisations within the University. Towards the end of his second year he was put in touch with Mixd; a web agency based in Harrogate. He spent a couple of days a week working with them over the summer for his third year placement module and was later asked to stay on board during the remainder of his studies. Once he graduated, they offered him a full-time job. More recently he was promoted to Senior Front-End Developer – where he helps lead the company in responsive design and front-end strategy.

Jason Hobbs

Jason graduated from New Media in 2009. After that he spent 3 months on contract at NetConstruct as a Helpdesk Developer whilst he searched the job market for more appropriate roles. Jason then secured a job as a Web Developer at Teabag Studios and has been working there ever since. He is set to join Aaron Thomas and the team at Mixd in March 2013 as a Front-end Developer. In his 3 years at Teabag Studios, Jason pushed the quality of work higher by researching and introducing many modern development practices, including responsive web design, object-oriented CSS and CSS pre-processing. At Teabag Studios he has worked on custom Zend and Magento projects but mainly specialises in front-end and WordPress development. Jason has recently worked on exciting responsive websites like EA Games, Cityliving and Roost. He’s also a regular attendee at SummitAwesome meet-ups and hackathons.

Sarah Turner: Digital Engagement Consultant, Axonn Media

Once Sarah graduated, she worked at Barratts/Priceless (the shoe company) as a creative web designer but got made redundant when the company went into administration. She then worked as a search optimization executive at a company called Adfero in Leeds, dealing with social media. She has just been promoted to be a digital engagement consultant for Axonn Media. Her new role will encompass email marketing, online marketing strategies, PR and the social media for famous household brands.

Laurence Nair: Chroma Life

After graduating in 2006, Laurence set up a business with a friend producing websites and hosting for clients. He then set up Chroma Life Ltd (www.chroma-life.com) with the aim of providing artwork pieces, mirrors and accessories to hotels. He now supplies to Hilton, Marriott, Mint and a host of other independents. He has also launched Schmoo Lassi, (www.loveschmoo.co.uk) a yoghurt lassi drink which has had an inaugural listing nationally in Morrisons, Tescos and some independents.

Joe White: Business Web TV

Joe graduated in New Media from Leeds in 2010 and works for a small video/digital agency in Leeds. He works mainly in digital strategy planning and project management.
