Research Excellence Framework 2014
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) provides a national measure of how university departments rank for research. It compares departments in similar fields, such as Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management, by looking at their research publications, the way they support research and the impact this research has on wider society. We are pleased to report that the results of the most recent REF review (2014) placed the School of Media and Communication in the top ten of all UK departments in our subject area, and ranked us third when taking into account the size of submissions (a measure called ‘research power’). Of the research submitted by the School to the REF 2014, 82% was judged by experts to be either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ and 100% was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of impact.
Leeds was one of the largest submissions in our field, reflecting our wide coverage of media and communication, and one of the most inclusive: nearly all our staff featured in the submission. It’s great to see our work so well-recognised and it means that our teaching at all levels is informed by top quality research and scholarship.
