PhD student Ysabel Gerrard secures summer internship at Microsoft

March 15th, 2017

PhD student Ysabel Gerrard has been offered a summer internship at the Microsoft Research Social Media Collective (SMC).

She will be working alongside Professor Nancy Baym and Professor Tarleton Gillespie at Microsoft Research New England from May to September 2017, on a project about Instagram and Tumblr’s responses to public discourses about eating disorders.

The 12-week internship programme is aimed at advanced PhD students, and involves designing and executing an original project that is distinct from the topic of their PhD thesis. Ysabel’s new research responds to recently re-ignited debates about the extent to which media technologies are responsible for a rise in reported eating disorders, particularly amongst girls and young women.

She will write a paper to be submitted to New Media & Society by the end of her stay, and hopes to present the research findings at the AoIR (Association of Internet Researchers) conference in October 2017.

Ahead of her move to Microsoft, Ysabel will be visiting the Digital Methods Initiative at the University of Amsterdam to collect the data for her research, with the help of Professor Richard Rogers.
