Holly Steel appointed Lecturer of Media and Communication
August 16th, 2018
Dr Holly Steel joins the School of Media and Communication as a Lecturer in Media and Communication in September 2018. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of York.
Her research focuses on the role of social media in communicating conflict to distant audiences. In particular, her thesis examined the emergence of curation as a practice within the newsroom for following, verifying and covering conflict at a distance. Her research interests include critical witnessing, media representation, visual politics, human rights and the ethics of online research.
Her current research agenda focuses on the visual global politics of the ongoing Syria conflict. It aims to examine the different strategies used by social media activists within the conflict zone to gain the attention of English-language western news media, and the ways in which these strategies are then reported.
Holly is currently Social Media Editor of Information, Communication and Society.
