Pieter van der Houwen will discuss his profession as documentary filmmaker and photographer. A screening of his film Thru Dutch Eyes will precede the seminar. The film follows the New York based Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg on assignment in New York, Indiana and Los Angeles. The documentary will provide ample opportunity to discuss photographic methodology and approaches in regard to acquisition. Pieter will also elaborate on the production of two of his publications Resilience a visual report on the Tsunami stricken areas six months after the disaster. The second publication African Tabloid is a visual account of the contemporary African Diaspora in various cities around the world.
Pieter van der Houwen is a documentary photographer and filmmaker. Based in both the UK and The Netherlands. He has worked extensively on the African continent. His work in numerous African countries triggered his interest in the African Diaspora. His latest film “The Africa China Connection” is part of an on going project exploring the economic and political power of the African Diaspora. Currently he is pursuing a PhD at the University of Leeds focusing on the same diasporic theme.
